| A ROMANIAN national who was stabbed by robbers after he chased them down the street could be awarded a gold medal by the Madrid regional government.
The victim, 23, saw three masked individuals breaking into a perfume shop next to the bar where he works in Madrid’s C/ Toledo.
He gave chase and managed to catch up with one of the thieves, wrenching the safe he had stolen from the shop off him.
But the other two robbers stabbed him in the chest.
Doctor José Luis García Sabrido, who is treating the young hero, says his injuries are only superficial and he is recovering well.
Two Spaniards and a Ukrainian were later arrested.
Regional minister for immigration, Javier Fernández Lasquetti (pictured with Dr García Sabrido) says Madrid’s Romanian community can feel ‘justly proud’ of their compatriot’s ‘exemplary conduct’.
He visited the young man in hospital yesterday and reveals that the have-a-go hero has lived in the city for two years and ‘feels very at home’.
The decision to award the young man the gold medal came from regional president Esperanza Aguirre.
