| An ETA car bomb exploded at the Guardia Civil barracks in Burgos early Wednesday morning, causing injuries to 65 people and considerable damage to the building.
The façade of the 14-storery building was destroyed by the 'very powerful' bomb, probably some 200 kilos of explosives, that went off at 4am and that, had it not been holiday season, would probably have been caused many more injuries, as no warning was given.
Interior minister, Alfredo Pérez Rubalcaba, described the attack as a 'huge failure' believing that the terrorists, by bombing a building 'where almost 120 people were sleeping', were 'undoubtedly' looking to kill.
In this morning's press conference, he described the attack as 'particularly callous' because it was not only intended to kill members of the Guardia Civil, but their families as well.
'We've always known that when dealing with ETA, we've been dealing with a gang of savage murderers,' he added, 'but now we know that they're insane as well.'
The president of the Castilla & León autonomous government, Juan Vicente Herrera, who visited the scene of the bombing this morning, also expressed his disgust, saying 'ETA went to Burgos to kill' and describing the attack as 'a barbarous act by assassins'.
More that 10,000 people gathered in Burgos town hall square this afternoon to express their utter condemnation of ETA's attack on their city and their support for the victims. |
