| Hundreds of people filled Burgos Cathedral this afternoon for the funeral of Carlos Sáenz de Tejada, the Guardia Civil officer murdered by ETA in Mallorca on Thursday along with his Mallorcan colleague, Diego Salvà.
The Archbishop of Burgos, Francisco Gil Hellín, conducted the service and many public and military figures joined friends and family to mourn the loss of the 28-year-old's life.
Gil proclaimed an 'absolute condemnation of these inhuman acts' and prayed for 'an end to terrorism and peace amongst our people.'
In his sermon, the Archbishop referred to the ETA bombing as a 'despicable assassination' and asked the terrorists to 'put down their arms, ask for forgiveness and suffer their due punishment'.
He called for an end to all terrorism and the 'conversion of all those who sow the seeds of discord, confrontation and violence amongst the Spanish people'.
Referring to the ETA bombing of the Guardia Civil barracks in Burgos on July 29th, that 'thankfully resulted in no loss of lfe', the Archbishop added that the town of Burgos could have been 'submerged in a sea of misery' and said that anyone with any dignity 'should reject terrorism'. |
