| AROUND 50 former Nissan workers blocked off the coast road in Barcelona yesterday in protest over the firm’s mass redundancies announced in July.
Just a day after a demonstration outside the factory gates, during which they prevented existing workers from entering the building, the disgruntled jobseekers have struck again.
Starting at around 07.30hrs, they blocked the Ronda Litoral in the city at exit 18 in both directions.
They consider the job-cuts, which have affected 700 members of staff, ‘discriminatory’.
Former employees say nobody’s personal circumstances were taken into account, and they believe union members were targeted first.
Spain’s three largest unions, the CCOO, UGT and USOC, have all stated that they disagree with the manner in which the redundancies were handled, but were not behind the protests.
USOC said the numbers laid off were ‘disproportional’ to the factory’s productive capacity, and that a good many of those made redundant were among their members.
