| Fernando Verdasco, Tommy Robredo, Juan Carlos Ferrero and Rafael Nadal are all through to the last 16 of 2009 US Open, matching Spain's record for this event.
Verdasco, seeded 10th, beat German Tommy Haas yesterday for the first time in his career to go through to the fourth round of the final grand slam tournament of the season.
Despite having to call for the physio during the second half of the match, the Madrileño came out on top after a gruelling three hour 45 minute battle, beating Haas 3-6, 7-5, 7-6(8), 1-6 and 6-4. Verdasco made the fourth round at the US Open in 2005, but is a much more complete player now. His next opponent will be the unseeded American John Isner, who caused a massive upset by ousting fellow countryman and fifth seed Andy Roddick.
Tommy Robredo beat local hero, James Blake, in straight sets 7-6, 6-4 and 6-4 to book his place in the last 16, where he'll take on number one seed, Roger Federer.
It was a sweet victory for Robredo, who has been beaten by Blake in five of their seven previous encounters, the most recent one two years ago in the Davis Cup qualifying rounds.
Rafael Nadal was also in action against fellow countryman, Nicolas Almagro, today. Nadal did not look at all comfortable in the first set and it was a hard-fought battle, but the world number three managed to take the match 7-5, 6-4, 6-4 in just over two and a half hours.
Both players had to receive medical attention during the thrid set, Rafa for abdominal pains and Almagro for back problems.
Nadal's next opponent will be France's Gäel Monfils, who beat Jose Acasuso last night 6-3, 6-4, 1-0, the Argentinian retiring injured early in the third set.
Juan Carlos Ferrero booked his ticket in the last 16 after Frenchman Gilles Simon had to retire in the fourth set of their thrid round match with the scoreboard at 1-6, 6-4, 7-6(5), 1-0.
Despite a very wobbly start, the Spaniard looked in control of the match when Simon had to retire with knee problems.
Ferrero's next opponent will be the Argentine, Juan Martín del Potro who despatched the fiery Austrian, Daniel Koellerer, in four sets. |
