| A shooting in the town of Son Banya near Palma de Mallorca, has left one woman dead and a number of people injured.
Two people have been arrested and are currently being held by National Police officers in cells in the Mallorcan capital.
Shots were heard at about 11pm yesterday in the centre of town and neighbours called both the local and national police, only to find that the injured had been already been taken to hospital in private cars by the time the emergency services arrived.
Witnesses said they heard shots, but could not identify those involved or give any possible reasons for the shooting.
With police officers on guard at the hospital, 45-year-old woman who had received a bullet to the head, died despite efforts by the medical staff to resuscitate her.
Another of the injured people was taken to Son Dureta hospital, where they remain under observation.
Several more people were treated in by staff at the hospital's accident and emergency department and one of them was spotted by a hospital security guard leaving the waiting room to go outside and hides something in nearby bushes.
The security guard reported the incident to the police, who inspected the area and found two revolvers and some amunition hidden in a sock. The man was immediately arrested as was another of the men waiting to be treated by hospital staff.
There are suggestions that the shooting was linked to clan warfare, but there appears to be no family link between the dead woman and the other injured people.
The investigation remains open and the police have not discarted the possibility of further arrests in conjunction with the killing. |
