| TO mark the 125th anniversary of the unique and beautiful aqueduct in Segovia being declared a national heritage monument, about a thousand people formed a human chain around the ancient Roman construction yesterday.
Singing ‘happy birthday to you’, the people of Segovia and hundreds of visitors gave each pillar of the aqueduct a ‘group hug’.
The massive irrigation bridge was built in the first century A.D. and was nominated as a National Heritage Monument in 1884.
This aqueduct is to the region of Castilla-y-León what the Colisseo is to Italy or the Eiffel Tower to France.
Its renown as a tourist attraction has spread far beyond Spain’s borders.
