| The 33rd America's Cup committee this morning announced the postponement of the first regatta between Alinghi and BMW-Oracle due to a lack of wind.
Both catamarans ( (pictured), had already left their bases and were out at sea this morning when the announcement was made by Harold Bennett, the committee's director.
The defender's boat, the Alinghi 5set off at 6.30am towards the race area, to the sound of Swiss bells and cheers from the more than 200 people at the base and lining the quay.
"We've been waiting a long time for this moment," said Ernesto Bertarelli, president of Team Alinghi, before the team set off.
A few minutes later BMW-Oracle's new trimaran, the USA, also left its base amidst a carnival atmosphere.
The weather forecast for today had predicted winds of between five and 12 knots, cloudy skies, a slight possibility of showers and maximum temperatures of 12 degrees, but it was decided at around 10am that there was insufficient wind for the race to take place. |
