Palafrugell is a municipality with more than 23,000 inhabitants located in the Baix Empordà region. The city consists of the administrative center inland, and near the coast are the centers of Llafranc, Calella, and Tamariu, which are currently active tourist hubs, in addition to the nucleus of Llofriu, at the foot of the Gavarres, and the neighborhoods of Santa Margarita and Ermedàs halfway between the sea and the plain where the city is located.
Situated between the eastern foothills of the Gavarres and the Begur mountains, the lands that make up the current nucleus of Palafrugell have been a marshy place since time immemorial, where water abounded and any type of habitat was scarce. The oldest site in the municipality is located in the Torrents area, in Llafranc, where we can still appreciate the dolmen of Can Mina today.
A privileged location, on the cape of San Sebastián, an imposing mountain that drops 165 meters over the sea at its highest point, favored the establishment of a small Iberian settlement in the 6th century BC. From there, the Iberians controlled the sea, but also the inland lands. Archaeological excavations have uncovered enormous silos, a significant element of the site, which demonstrate the importance of agriculture for its inhabitants, as well as livestock and especially fishing. Other activities, such as quarrying, craftsmanship, and trade with Greek and Italic towns, are also highlighted, as evidenced by the numerous imported pieces that have been found.
Its natural surroundings are predominantly characterized by the Gavarres massif and the Begur mountains, which are protected areas as they are sites of natural interest included in the Generalitat's Plan (PEIN). However, the coast is also rugged, which has led to the formation of many coves and capes, such as Cape San Sebastián.
In this locality, there are cultural heritage assets cataloged by the Generalitat of Catalonia; these include the Tower of San Sebastián (a watchtower built in the 15th century), the Tower of Can Mario (a water pressure regulating reservoir), and Port Bo Beach.
