Spanish businessman, 67, found dead in Argentina; son-in-law gives himself up to police
A SPANISH businessman missing since Saturday in Argentina has been found dead, tied up and his body burnt in the pictured town of Cañuelas, Buenos Aires province, and two men have been arrested.
One of the suspects in custody is Roberto Fernández's son-in-law.
Fernández, 67, was reported missing by one of his two daughters, who owns the construction site excavation company Mini Vial in the South American country, and CCTV footage showed the victim's son-in-law and one of his male employees moving a large cargo wrapped in a blanket out of his house in the port district of Caballito in the Argentinian capital.
In a statement to reporters on the national TV channel C5N, a woman named Liliana - a friend of Fernández's´partner – said the victim's cr had been found burnt out and that his son-in-law, whose name has not been revealed, 'swindled' him and 'left him financially ruined'.
The car was discovered in the Buenos Aires province town of Almirante Brown.
According to Fernández's family, a fraud was uncovered eight months ago in which the deceased had been conned out of a million Argentinian pesos, nearly US$63,000, through credits obtained in his name, cheques cashed in bank branches and instalment payments on lorries, excavators and other machinery he had bought for the company left unpaid, along with his insurance premiums.
His partner, María del Carmen, said the situation had led to the now-arrested son-in-law issuing 'threats', although the elder man never reported these as he feared reprisals against his daughter and grandchildren.
The victim's son-in-law has since given himself up to the police in Argentina.
