Snow is causing havoc in Northern Spain

The polar air mass, which is leaving snow at very low levels, between 200 and 500 meters, has caused numerous circulation problems in the main and secondary networks of Aragon, La Rioja, Cantabria, Basque Country, Navarra, Galicia and Castilla y León. The bad weather has forced the latter to close to traffic six road sections in Palencia, León and Burgos. Another sixteen roads are affected in which the use of chains is necessary, including the AP-1 between Grisaleña and Pancorbo, in the province of Burgos, according to data from the General Directorate of Traffic (DGT).

In Navarra, the intense snowfalls have caused the closure of four secondary roads and the mandatory use of chains on two of the main roads, the Leitzaran motorway (A-15) and the N-135 (Pamplona to France Valcarlos), with some stretches being cut off to traffic too.

The storm, which keeps the Basque Country on special alert for rainfall that could reach 15 centimetres above 600 meters, has also forced a complete closure to traffic in the port of Opakua and Herrera, both in Álava.

In Galicia, the strong winds are also causing havoc near Mondoñedo (Lugo) and the fog is impeding the movement of lorries from Lerma to the city of Burgos in both directions.
