The mains drainage company, Canal de Isabel II, had been digging into the road surface to repair underground pipes when a huge hole opened, forcing workment to shut three lanes in a northbound direction.
Queues stretched back onto the A-2 motorway, since cars entering via the equally-busy C/ Gregorio Benítez were unable to turn south onto the C/ Arturo Soria or onto the M-30 ringroad.
Furious commuters have criticised the Canal de Isabel II for not giving prior warnings of the works, which would have caused some delays in any case.
The huge underground pipe burst on Thursday, and is expected to take at least 15 days to repair.
Already today, city buses have had to alter their routes because of the gridlock.
Literally thousands of commuters were stuck in queues this morning, making them very late for work – several hours in some cases – and the tailbacks have continued throughout the day, even at off-peak times.
